OceanPointe's 9-week Orthodontic Assisting Program comprises of 122 total course clock hours:

The program is a 9-week program, including 21 online lecture clock hours, 56 laboratory clock hours, 5 hours CPR, plus 40 clock hours of externship with a local practicing orthodontist.


Each lab class period is 8 hours in length and meets Saturday from 9 am to 6 pm for seven classes. There is a one-hour lunch break, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm Online lectures and laboratory sessions are followed by two weeks of externship at the end of the program. Class are taught as shown in the online course/hands-on lab table. Online modules assigned for the week must be completed prior to the hands-on lab portion for that week.


Students are required to wear appropriate clinical dental attire, which includes scrubs, safety glasses, gloves, and masks. Which will be provided and are included in the program tuition. All students must wear long hair pulled back and clean shoes, no visible tattoos or piercings (other than earrings). Our policy is set up to ensure that students get accustomed to the professional environment of working in an orthodontic dental practice.

Course Outline

• WEEK 01 •

General introduction to the exciting field of Orthontics, including your orientation to our clinic and orthodontic terminology.

• WEEK 02 •

Orthodontic instruments, and equipment, instrument transfer methods. The set-up and breakdown of dental operatory and learn the different components of the orthodontic operatory and the dental chair.

• WEEK 03 •

Learn the parts of the orthodontic appliance, Elastomeric ligatures, Steel ligatures, selecting, inserting, and tying in an initial wire in a newly bonded patient. Covered are approaches orthodontists utilize to treat malocclusion and correct misaligned teeth.

• WEEK 04 •

 learn the categories and indications for headgear treatment and how orthodontic headgear works in correcting malocclusion problems involving the upper jaw and mandible. How to assure patient compliance with removable secondary appliances and trimming and polishing.

• WEEK 05 •

Safely removing orthodontic bands,

brackets, adhesive, cement, attachments, and restoring the teeth to a high shine. Retention and post treatment. Students are taught the process of selecting the best retention procedures with the patient following orthodontic tooth movement therapy.

• WEEK 06 •

Steps in making quality working models and an overview of study models.  preparing impressions for pouring, making a tongue, pouring the impression using the Vacumixer, pouring a base, preparing models for trimming, marking and trimming models to ABO standards, finishing and labeling.

• WEEK 07 •

The uses of digital photographs at the New Patient Exam, for documentation of special concerns, for Progress Records, for Post-treatment documentation, and for enhanced communication with patients, parents, and other practitioners. learn to digitally chart and maintain patient diagnostic records on orthodontic patient software.

• WEEK 08 •

Radiology theory and practice of intraoral and extraoral X-ray techniques, X-ray safety, darkroom procedures.


Final exam and practical exam.
